Stackers make warehouse work easier
Warehouse trolleys such as a stacker are essential in the logistics sector. They help you manage your warehouse by increasing productivity and reducing the risk of accidents for your staff. Purchasing the right tool - such as a stacker - is critical to making work behind the scenes easier, faster and safer.
What is a stacker actually?
The hydraulic stacker is a mobile lifting device that combines the features of a pallet truck and a forklift truck. It is usually motorized and is used to lift and move heavy and bulky products without any problem. This lifting device consists of a drawbar, a pump unit, a mast, side rails and forks or even a platform:
- The tiller is the "steering wheel" of the stacker and is used to control the forward, reverse and lift of the forks of the machine.
- The pump unit groups all elements that enable the stacker to lift goods
- The mast, the vertical element that, together with the chain and the lever, makes it possible to lift and lower loads.
- The side rails ensure the stability of the equipment when lifting loads.
- The forks that grab the goods. There is also a platform available that can be mounted in place of the fork.
Why do I need a stacker?
The stacker is a must in the warehouse and allows you to handle heavy loads on pallets in complete safety. Simple, powerful and fast, it is also an important ally in the fight against SSAs (musculoskeletal disorders). Astonishing figures show that disruptions, strains and fractures together account for as much as 38% of all work-related incidents in the EU.
Figures from the Netherlands state the same: complaints about the back, shoulders and neck are respectively the most common health problems in the workplace. When an employee takes on a heavy burden or makes repetitive gestures, there is in principle an increased risk of developing SSAs, especially in the back. By using a stacker, the operator will be demonstrably ergonomic, less fatigued and thus more productive at work. This is fully in line with recommendations from our government.
Less impressive than a forklift but more advanced than a pallet truck. This makes it possible for this type of forklift to lift, move, load and stack load up to 1000kg easily, quickly and safely. For example, with the stacker, you can quickly clear an aisle to make your warehouse neater and tidy. It is also very easy to handle and its size makes it ideal for working in small spaces.
How does this work in practice?
Operating a stacker is relatively easy to learn. However, depending on the type of stacker and additional requirements of your organization, you may need a safety certificate. In addition, it is almost always mandatory to be equipped with personal protective equipment (helmet, safety shoes, gloves). Depending on the type of stacker, the operator will sit or stand next to the machine when it is in use.
A manual stacker requires no maintenance and can be used safely. Simply hold the tiller and press the pedal to raise and lower the forks. Before each use, it is wise to check that the machine and all parts are apparently intact. Once this check is done, it is a matter of continuously checking the load and speed to avoid accidents with heavy loads and injuries.
